Missy Raines

Celebrated bluegrass bassist Missy Raines comes into her own as a vocalist and a songwriter with a new album and a new quartet.

Missy is touring with Matt Flinner on mandolin, Ben Garnett on acoustic guitar, and Avery Merritt on fiddle. This will be her first tour of 2020 following her debut on the Grand Ole Opry (Jan 18). Last year, for the EIGHTH time, Raines won the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Bass Player of the Year Award — an award which she has claimed more often than anyone else in bluegrass history.

Raines’ recording of “Darlin’ Pal(s) of Mine” from her new album Royal Traveller was named the 2019 IBMA Instrumental Recorded Performance of the Year. The album (produced by Alison Brown) is nominated for a GRAMMY® award for Best Bluegrass Album. Released in October of 2018 on Compass Records, Royal Traveller was called “Unerringly affecting and exquisitely executed” by Bluegrass Today. It marks her debut as a songwriter, with 11 tracks that stretch from bluegrass into new musical territory.

The first single from Royal Traveller, “Swept Away,” was awarded 2018 IBMA Recorded Event of the Year. It featured a new collaboration of the five women who were first to win the IBMA instrumental awards in their categories — Sierra Hull, Molly Tuttle, Alison Brown, Becky Buller and Raines — now known as “The First Ladies of Bluegrass.” Missy along with the “First Ladies” were featured as part of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s 2019 American Currents exhibit.
