Sviraj

This band is a longtime favorite in the Eastern European immigrant community of Steelton (south of Harrisburg, PA), where folks are passionate about dancing and music. The four member of Sviraj were brought up in that tradition, learning from their elders, dancing and playing because that's what you did.

“Sviraj” is pronounced “SVEE-rye” with a rolled R. In Serbo-Croatian it means “play,” or “play on.” It isn't a request to “play, please.” It is a command!

The band might start off with popular songs or other tunes, but before long, someone will come up and say “Aren’t you guys gonna play any kolos today?” Danilo explains, “It’s not, ‘Please.’ It’s, ‘What good are you if you’re not gonna play any kolos?’ We say, ‘But we have these other couple of songs we wanted to play...’ No. Play. Sviraj! Play kolos.

“Sviraj” is also shouted in encouragement and approval to tambura musicians playing with special energy or inspiration. Tambura, the musical genre, refers to tamburitza, a family of lute-like stringed instruments ranging in size and tone from the low-voiced bass to the higher-octave prim.

The “Bringing it Home” series is a project of our Susquehanna Folk Arts Center which is created in partnership with the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. Meet more amazing artists from Central PA in our Folk Artists Gallery.
