About This Event:
Caña Dulce y Caña Brava are exceptional performers of son jarocho, a Mexican tradition that combines music, dance and poetry. The group brings a feminine perspective to this historically male-dominated tradition.
The group's name, Caña Dulce y Caña Brava, comes from a song by Patricio Hidalgo that talks about the duality of sugar cane: its sweet taste balanced against the martyrdom of its harvest. The name evokes sweet memories of their home in Veracruz, where sugar cane is widely cultivated.
Caña Dulce y Caña Brava are exceptional performers of son jarocho, a Mexican tradition that combines music, dance and poetry. The group brings a feminine perspective to this historically male-dominated tradition.
The harmony of their voices floats around the vibrations of the horse jaw, the mystical sounds of the harp, the strums of the jaranas, and the brisk rhythms of their tapping feet. The flashy colors of their dresses enhance their irresistibly festive performance.
Join us for an afternoon workshop to learn the basics of the group's lively percussive dance! Workshop details
The son jarocho tradition is centuries old, with roots in Spanish, African, and Native cultures that now coexist in the Veracruz region of Mexico. All the group's members have learned directly from masters of the tradition, and have developed and proven their skills at both national and international stages. In the near future they will be recognized as masters — maestras — in their own right. Their dedication, innovation and perseverance has established the group as a benchmark for son jarocho.
Proudly representing their culture around the world since 2007, the group has been invited to perform in South, Central and North America, as well as Europe, Africa and Asia. They are often invited to represent Mexico in Cultural Diplomatic missions.
