Shape Note Singing

Learn to sing four-part harmonies, even if you can't read a note of music, in a Shape Note Singing School led by Maria Cramer and Robin Banerji. After the School, share the joy of singing with a group in four-part harmony in the Sacred Harp tradition.

Shape note singing is full-voiced, energetic, and deeply emotional a cappella harmony designed for beginners to pick up and sing. It originated in early American Christian congregational singing, and while the themes — struggle, love, death, and devotion — are intense, they are deeply resonant in every age. In this workshop, we will orient singers to the form of shape note singing using the most popular songbook, The Sacred Harp, and teach the class how to lead songs in the center of the hollow square. A regular sing will follow the singing school.

Robin Banerji and Maria Cramer have been singing shape note music in community for years, attending numerous all-day sings and conventions on the East Coast of the United States and abroad. They have led singing schools at several dance weekends, including Head for the Hills in Northeastern Pennsylvania and Dandelion Romp in Oberlin, Ohio.
